Monthly Theme: January

January is a beginning, providing opportunity to reflect on the previous year and consider how we want to enter the new one that is before us. We may restart our engines, put on our thinking caps, and with the end-in-mind, approach the remainder of the school year with confidence. There are many ways to support moving forward, including revisiting essential ideas and competencies and thinking about all we've encountered in the past year through powerful and illuminating concepts. This month's Feature theme is Start to Finish, and includes collections on self-care for sustainable study, opportunities to hone critical thinking across subjects, and concept-based approaches to teaching and learning.

Love! Revenge! Identity! Survival against all odds! These are just a few of the words that might summarize the theme (the underlying universal truth) of a great piece of literature. Identifying the theme of a story is a powerful comprehension strategy. As students become more sophisticated readers, they will be challenged to use their understanding of a text to discuss its theme. Living More Sustainably through Consumer Choices

Many people want to live more sustainably, but it can be difficult to know where to start. Often, people feel helpless as individuals in the face of huge, global problems like climate change. Luckily, there are proven strategies that every person can implement to live more sustainably in their homes and daily lives. What are some of these strategies? And how can we convince others to live more sustainably, even if they are hesitant to do so? Issues in the News: Who's the Super Spreader for Malaria?

Malaria is one of the worst health problems on the planet. This disease, caused by a microscopic parasite transmitted by mosquitoes, kills hundreds of thousands of people each year, especially young children. In this collection, students become the detectives as they examine evidence to try to deduce how malaria is spread. They then read about the October 2021 news story that a new vaccine for malaria has been recommended by the World Health Organization. At the end of the collection, various options are presented for students to dig deeper into malaria and the efforts to fight it. Copy Collection

Mindfulness: Benefits of Mindfulness

More than ever, students need to be equipped with skills to help them navigate life and stay grounded and well. Additionally, we as educators know that we need to ensure we are modelling behaviours and skills that we wish for our students to embody. This collection has been put together with this in mind.
