Monthly Theme: November
With the end of the calendar year approaching, November is a month when we are often especially aware of the passing of time. We also observe a number of important days of remembrance: Louis Riel Day, Treaties Recognition Day, Canada History Week, and Remembrance Day. By taking time to reflect on how the events of the past continue to influence and shape us, we become better equipped to appreciate the present and improve the future.

Canada History Week encourages all Canadians to learn more about the people and events that have shaped this country. It was established in 2013 by the Department of Canadian Heritage. Each year has a theme. The theme for 2021 is Indigenous History, which will highlight the diversity of Indigenous languages, cultures, histories, and perspectives. Some memorials are created by governments or communities; others are personal efforts. Have you ever seen a cross or a memorial along a highway commemorating the loss of someone? Some people believe these memorials should be removed and are inappropriate on highways and roads. Others believe they are important remembrances of loved ones and should be left to stand. Work with your class to write an opinion essay on what they think. Copy Edwin Collection
After Dalton got modern atomic theory rolling in the early 1800s, a series of discoveries followed that resulted in its adjustment and refinement. Throughout the remainder of the 19th century and into the 20th, many scientists and inventors contributed to the further development of atomic theory. This collection introduces students to aspects of the Standard Model of Physics. Students will learn about the smallest fundamental particles that we know as of today. The aim of this collection is to have students explore and synthesize ideas from a variety of sources to enhance their understanding of and pique their curiosity about the composition of atoms and raise their awareness of how our ideas of these once indivisible particles have changed over time. This is an open inquiry project in which students work in groups to plan out the details of a bike trip anywhere in Canada as they play the role of bicycle tour operators. They will use math to analyze the distance and time needed for each leg of the route, plan out exciting highlights for participants to see, and will calculate the costs associated with the trip. They will compile all this information into a brochure that is intended to entice potential customers. Finally, they have the option to present their trip to the class. Copy Edwin Collection
In this project, students use data analysis to identify an essential service need in a community. Students will research data about the population of a community they wish to advocate for, and look for evidence to support a request for improving an existing, or adding a new essential service (e.g., schools, hospitals, roads, etc.). They will analyze the data collected, and then write a business letter (or create a presentation) advocating for their request. Copy Edwin Collection
